Vienna’s Colorful Rebel!

Some places can impress you because they’re grand, but others stay with you because they refuse to be anything like the rest!

The Hundertwasser House was that place for me. The day before leaving Vienna I was going to the Prater but on the way I had to make a stop first at one of the most talked about places and there it was looking like it was trying to fit in on a normal block with shops for the everyday people!  Bursting with color and life, I loved the bright ceramic tiles and the playful windows that all seemed to have their own personalities Hundertwasser House most certainly doesn’t chase perfection… It celebrates being different! Designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser and finished in the mid-1980s, the building was meant as a stand against dull, boxy conformity. Trees grow out of it, lines bend, right angles are optional and standing there, I felt like maybe only an artist can truly appreciate that kind of bold freedom. Not because others don’t appreciate it, but because artists see something personal in it, permission to create without asking, and that stayed with me.
