The Day Austria Scared Me Half to Death!
When I was planning my trip to Austria, Fortress Hohensalzburg was high on my list to visit. Perched above Salzburg I decided to walk up rather than take the funicular. It was a chilly day, but the climb was worth it for the incredible views. Inside, the fortress was fascinating with centuries-old rooms and exhibits about military history, all very interesting, even for someone who isn’t a huge history or war buff. But then, without warning, air raid sirens started blaring across the city… I froze, my phone buzzed with an EXTREME THREAT alert, in that moment that is all I seen were those two words …the rest a blur! I had no idea what was happening, all around me people kept strolling like nothing was wrong, while I was genuinely terrified. After fumbling around and doing some checking, I finally realized it was just a nationwide test of the emergency system. Relief doesn’t even begin to cover it. Looking back on it now I can laugh. It’s become one of my most vivid Austria memories. And the fortress itself? Absolutely worth the visit. So, if you ever hear air raid sirens on your Austrian vacation, take a breath, check your phone, and maybe have Google Translate ready!
